Oral Law - Sonja

Oral Law Assignment

The mitzvah that I find easiest to relate to is "You shall each revere his mother and father, and keep My sabbaths: I the Lord am your God." To me, this means that I must respect my parents and take a day to rest and reflect on my week. As a Jew in the modern world, I do not refrain from doing any of my regular activities on Shabbat, but I look forward to it because it means that I get to have dinner with my family and that is why I think that "revering his father and mother, and keep My sabbaths" fall under the same commandment. I do not think that you have to take a break from doing certain activities on Shabbat, I do, however, think that it is important to take a moment to appreciate the most precious parts of your life; in my case, that would be my family.

This is a picture of my family as Ronnie and I were skyping them at 1:00 a.m. for their Shabbat dinner. One of the things that I have have been missing the most during my time in Israel is spending time with my family. The members of my family are some of the coolest people I have ever met and they have had the largest impact on my Jewish identity.
